The health care professions in our class that collaborates with my professions as a letter carrier at Canada Post and massage therapist are physiotherapist, client care coordinator, researcher, and nursing. My profession in Canada Post and as a massage therapist frequently collaborates with physiotherapists.

During the hiring process at Canada Post, I was required to undergo physical ability testing by a physiotherapist to indicate whether I could physically do my job as a letter carrier. In addition, I was required to perform strenuous exercises with special equipment that monitored my heart rate and blood pressure. This assessment was paid for by Canada Post as part of my employment screening requirements, and the hiring agency was through CBI Health.

Before I became a massage therapist, I sought weekly rehabilitation treatments from a physiotherapist for a sprained ankle, which led to ongoing massage therapy and chiropractic treatments in Edmonton, Alberta. I had health benefits through Alberta health services and was allotted up to twelve weekly visits with a physiotherapist.

As massage therapists, we collaborate with other healthcare providers in a multi-disciplinary setting. When I attended university, I learned how my profession interacts with other healthcare practitioners, such as physiotherapists and other professionals in rehabilitation. Massage therapy relies on clinical studies that have produced peer-reviewed research reports, journals, and important information for the treatments, benefits, and prevention of injury for patients. In my work experience as a massage therapist, I worked in medical clinics and collaborated with other massage therapists, acupuncturists, natural path doctors, doulas, counselors, and chiropractors.

This week’s learning activities have extended my knowledge of how my profession fits in the healthcare industry and how our health system shapes it. I learned the importance of the roles of other health care practitioners regarding my work, how the Canada Health Act and the Canada Health Professions Act have the most influence, and what regulation massage therapy follows. I was unaware that massage therapists were regulated under the former Physiotherapists act, although today, the health professionals act is its rightful designation. Massage therapists collaborate with other health practitioners, for the health and goals of clients but by the specific provincial laws and regulations of one’s profession in Canada.
